In 1994, a Mr. Toonen from Tasmania had been arrested for being in a same-sex relationships. Mr. Toonen took his case to the U.N. Commission on Human Rights and ultimately won his case. The commission said his arrest was a breach of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and of the right of privacy. French activist Louis-George Tin, founder of the International Day Against Homophobia wants to cite that case and use it as precedent in the hopes that the same jurisprudence will be extended to 75 countries, where being gay or lesbian (being in a same sex-relationship) is still a crime.
